The European Month of Photography is the greatest photography festival to suport the european photo community and started in 2004 in Berlin, Paris and Vienna. Since 2006, Bratislava, Luxembourg, Moscow and Rome also take part. More than 120 organisations are taking part in the 4th Edition of the Euopean Month of Photography -including museums, cultural institutes, embassies and Länder representations, as well as photo schools, galleries and projects. Over 250 exhibitions and events are taking place both on contemporary or historical photography.

The Berlin Fotomarathon took part in the 2006 European Month of Photography, with the Fotomarathon taking place during the Autumm as part of the Programme.

Modern Life, New Images

‘Modern times, new Images’ is the phrase that sums it all up – a theme focusing on photography as an instrument of modernisation. Museums and cultural institutions, galleries and exhibition organisers have been invited to dedicate their exhibitions to this modernising function of the photographic medium, taking different aspects into account. After all, it has long been a matter of general knowledge that photographs do more than just ‘reproduce reality’. What the camera registers, and the way in which the result is reproduced, is rather a matter of interpretation and so can be seen as the creation of new and additional realities. Several specific fields relating to this theme were proposed to participating institutions by way of example, and all these areas reappear in the festival in the form of historic, and – even more importantly – contemporary samples of the art.

This year’s MdF is divided in five main blocks:

• Metropolitan lifestyle(s)
• Fashion photography
• Photography and science
• New pictorial worlds and techniques
